Two summers ago I decided to study the Psalms. If you’re anything like me you firmly believe that you have read every word of the Bible. If you’re honest you know that’s probably not true especially when it comes to the Old Testament. And so I embarked on my journey through the book. One hundred and fifty of them seemed daunting but I dove in.
And then I read Psalm 5 and it stopped me in my tracks.
O God, you take no pleasure in wickedness;
you cannot tolerate the sins of the wicked.
Therefore, the proud may not stand in your presence,
for you hate all who do evil.
You will destroy those who tell lies.
The Lord detests murderers and deceivers. – Psalm 5:4-6 (NLT)
David’s words in those three little verses in chapter 5 felt like a hammer blow to the head. Pride along with murder and deceit are on the list of wicked things the Lord cannot tolerate. He takes no pleasure in wickedness. I can choose to not lie and I think I can make it through this life without killing someone…but I won’t get out of this hour without being prideful.
But let us rejoice because help is here. We have pride busters living with us. We are parents and by definition we must then have children. They will find ways was to keep you humble because having no answers will humble you real fast and that’s where I find myself most (all) of the time. Being a parent is hard…and confusing at times. Even though we have all of this training and books and resources our kids can sometimes still leave us without any answers.
That’s why we pray because only He can heal our kids…not us who like to think we have all of the answers. Because we love our kids we should humbly present them to the Lord and ask for His grace and mercy.
