Homemade Sloppy Joes

I have never really liked Sloppy Joe’s.  Not just because they are sloppy, but because they just had a strange flavor to me.   For some reason thought, they sounded good to me and I decided to find a homemade recipe that I could make without using those cans of “sauce” with their questionable ingredient list.  I came across a recipe that sounded easy and bonus…I had all the ingredients!  I have since tweaked the recipe for our preferred ingredients and come up with a recipe that we LOVE!  I hope you like it too!

Sloppy Joes

  • 1lb ground beef *
  • 1 med onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 T apple cider vinegar
  • 1 T prepared mustard
  • 1/2 c ketchup
  • 1 carrot (grated)
  • 1 zucchini (grated)
  • salt and pepper (to taste)

In a large pan, brown your ground beef and onion together.  Then, add the rest of the ingredients and simmer for about 20 min.  Serve on whole wheat buns or toast.  It is so easy and really yummy!

*Money Saving Tip:  We have to double this recipe for our big family.  If you want to stretch it further without doubling the meat, try adding some cooked rice or black beans in after you brown the beef. You’ll want to double the sauce still to get it nice and saucy!
